The High Nines
Debut Album
The High Nines have clearly been raiding the time machine. Their self titled debut album (that we got early access to) is 13 tracks of pure throwback indie, the kind of stuff that makes you want to dig out your old Adidas and declare yourself “mad fer it” again. They have bottled that swaggering North West magic that gave us The Stone Roses and Oasis, then sprinkled in a little Kasabian strut just to keep things spicy.
What really stands out though is how clean and polished this whole thing sounds. Instead of the usual “recorded on a toaster in someone’s kitchen” vibe that a lot of debut indie albums have, this is crisp, professional and ready to be blasted in stadiums. The guitars shimmer, the bass actually gets its moment to shine, and the drums hit like they mean business. It feels like they skipped the awkward first step and went straight to sounding like headliners.
Now, in our opinion, the real gem here is “Daydreaming.” It has that cheeky grin about it, the track that sneaks up on you and before you know it, you are singing it in the shower like you wrote it yourself. It is cool without even trying, which is the most rock and roll thing you can be. We also have to talk about "Walrus Bar" that peaked at Number 6 on the iTunes Alternative chart. Well played lads!
In short, The High Nines have nailed it. They have made a debut that feels familiar yet exciting, polished but not sterile, and just cocky enough to pull it off. If this is only their first swing, then the rest of the indie scene might want to start stretching before they try to keep up.
Get yourself down to The Castle for the album launch party which is sure to be intimate and rocking.
Soul31
Chef's Kiss
Soul31 is back in the kitchen, and this time he’s cooking up something deliciously smooth with his latest single "Chef’s Kiss" – a laid-back, funky-pop gem that simmers with style, served with a wink and a slow groove. Produced by Dean Glover at Manchester’s VIBE Recording Studio, the track blends Soul31’s signature charm with a fresh lo-fi polish, reminiscent of Sabrina Carpenter’s sassier slow burners – but with a recipe that’s all his own.
Soul31 floats effortlessly across the instrumental like a silky béchamel over pasta – every lyric deliberately plated, every vocal run garnished to perfection.
Underneath the food metaphors and slick production lies something more nourishing – a genuine warmth. Soul31 doesn’t just play with words; he knows how to plate a mood. "Chef’s Kiss" isn’t trying to blow your speakers – it’s the kind of track you queue up when you're slow-dancing in the kitchen, glass of red in hand, apron still on.
With Dean Glover's subtle, soulful production as the sous-chef in this sonic feast, Soul31 proves yet again why he’s one of Manchester’s tastiest rising pop exports. Funky, flirtatious, and full of flavour, this track is exactly what it says on the tin.
Verdict: 🔥 Certified banger – five stars on the menu.
Pair with: Candlelight, warm weather, and someone worth cooking for.
The Big Bang
Gracie Beverley
Gracie Beverley’s latest release, The Big Bang, is a breathtaking love song that feels both timeless and refreshingly modern. Rooted in the grand romanticism of 1960s love ballads yet infused with a melancholic, cinematic quality reminiscent of Lana Del Rey, Gracie delivers a track that is as intimate as it is powerful.
From the very first note, the haunting piano sets the stage for an emotionally charged performance. Beverley’s delicate yet commanding vocals glide effortlessly over the melody, drawing listeners into the depths of her love story. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of that life-altering moment when she meets "the one," capturing the intensity and beauty of love at first sight.
The production by Dean Glover is flawless—lush yet restrained, allowing the song’s raw emotion to take center stage. Every note, every breath, and every orchestral swell feels intentional, building toward a chorus that swells like a cinematic climax. It’s nostalgic without feeling dated, classic yet undeniably fresh.
With The Big Bang, Gracie Beverley has crafted a love song that lingers long after the final note fades—a testament to both her songwriting prowess and her ability to evoke deep emotion. This is a song destined to soundtrack slow dances, wistful daydreams, and late-night confessions of love. This song would not be out of place in a John Lewis Christmas advert or the climax of the next Hollywood Rom-Com. Having had the pleasure to witness Mrs Beverley grace the stage (Pun most definitely intended) We're excited to see what's to come for this wonderfully talented artist in the coming weeks and months.
Homecoming
Jay Chambers
Jay Chambers’ "Homecoming" is a richly textured exploration of identity, heritage, and self-discovery. A spoken word, reggae, and hip-hop artist with roots in Manchester and Jamaica, Chambers takes listeners on a deeply personal journey that is both grounded in the past and unapologetically relevant to today. Recorded in Jamaica, "Homecoming" exudes an unmistakable authenticity, layering the sounds of reggae’s rhythmic warmth and hip-hop’s raw energy with his thoughtful lyricism.
The album is crafted as a narrative-driven experience, taking us through the story of Chambers’ journey to reconnect with his Jamaican heritage. Through this story-based structure, he offers insight into both the beauty and the complexity of his cultural background. The beats are meticulously chosen to reflect the dual influences in his life, blending the earthy basslines and vibrant percussion of reggae with modern hip-hop beats, and infusing them with the poetic resonance of spoken word.
Lyrically, "Homecoming" is a deeply introspective and political work. Chambers addresses topics of identity, family, and the socio-political issues affecting both Jamaica and the UK, moving between reflective storytelling and spirited declarations. His words are vivid and poignant, painting pictures of resilience, pride, and hope. There’s a sense of emotional weight throughout the album, but it’s balanced by moments of joy and celebration of culture.
"Homecoming" stands out as a project where each track builds upon the last, creating a cohesive, almost cinematic experience. Jay Chambers doesn’t just perform; he crafts an atmosphere that invites the listener into his world. This album is more than a collection of songs—it’s a journey of self-discovery, a tribute to heritage, and a bridge between the personal and the political. With "Homecoming," Chambers proves himself a storyteller and artist who is both rooted in tradition and pushing musical boundaries.

Momentum
Token Honey
Token Honey's latest EP, "Momentum," is a vibrant testament to their knack for blending funk and pop into a delicious musical concoction. Hailing from Manchester, this five-piece ensemble delivers a collection of tracks that exude infectious energy and nostalgic vibes reminiscent of the soundtrack of TV series like "Stranger Things."
From the opening notes of the EP, Token Honey wastes no time in setting the tone with their signature blend of funky basslines, groovy guitar riffs, and catchy melodies. Each track on "Momentum" feels like a journey through a retro-futuristic landscape, where the neon glow of the '80s meets the modern sensibilities of today's pop music.
One of the standout qualities of "Momentum" is its ability to transport listeners to a different era while still feeling fresh and relevant. Tracks like "Way of You" and "Dire Dreaming" are prime examples of this, with their infectious hooks and danceable rhythms that beg to be played on repeat.
The EP's production is also worth noting, as it strikes a perfect balance between polished studio sheen and raw, live energy. Each instrument is given its moment to shine, from the punchy drums to the soulful keys, creating a sonic landscape that is both dynamic and immersive.
But perhaps the most impressive aspect of "Momentum" is its versatility. Whether you're in the mood for a laid-back groove or a high-energy dance anthem, Token Honey delivers the goods with style and finesse. “Dire Dreaming” being our favourite track with its dreamy by name, dreamy by nature lightness.
In conclusion, Token Honey's "Momentum" EP is a must-listen for fans of funk, pop, and everything in between. With its infectious melodies, retro vibes, and undeniable charm, it's the perfect soundtrack for both late-night parties and nostalgic road trips. Keep an eye on Token Honey – with "Momentum," they're poised to make a big splash in the music scene.
Apples & Oranges
Soul31
The exceptional Soul31 returns with his new single "Apples & Oranges" The follow up track after the successful “I.K.Y.K” which was played several times on Radio 1 Future Pop with Mollie King. The intro sounds like it’s straight from an 80’s pop tune, with its synth melodies and upbeat tempo, the song effortlessly transports listeners to a sun-kissed, summery atmosphere. It’s got GTA Vice City vibes and we’re all for it. I can see Tommy Vercetti riding that Moped to the club, Hawaiian shirt blowing in the wind, Soul31 on the radio…but this isn’t Miami!
But what sets "Apples and Oranges" apart is its ability to evoke that sense of nostalgia while still feeling current and relevant. I listen to this song and I’m instantly shifted to lazy summers, park visits with friends and family, maybe a little beach trip. The perfect summer song.
The production is polished and vibrant with help of Dean Glover creating an atmosphere that’s both immersive and uplifting. It's the kind of song that instantly puts a smile on your face and makes you want to dance.
The new single "Apples and Oranges" is a testament to Soul31's songwriting prowess and musical versatility showing that he is now a bona-fide Pop artist and has cut ties with his previous genres. He’s made a decision and he’s sticking with it and we think it’s a great choice. With its irresistible hook and feel-good vibes, this single is sure to become a favourite for fans of pop music everywhere.
Anyway… the burning question is “Do you prefer Apples or Oranges, or something different?”
Tape94
Gilly MCR
In an era where hip-hop often feels dominated by the glitz and glamour of modern production techniques, Gilly MCR's latest offering, "Tape 94," is a refreshing throwback to the golden age of the genre. With its nostalgic beats and impeccable flows, this album transports listeners back to the gritty streets of '90s New York, where the essence of hip-hop was born.
From the moment the needle drops on the opening track, "94" it's evident that Gilly MCR is on a mission to pay homage to the pioneers of the genre. The boom-bap drums, soulful samples, and scratchy vinyl crackles set the stage for what's to come—a journey through the raw and unfiltered sounds of old-school hip-hop.
Tracks like "Floaten" and "M23" paint vivid portraits of urban life, with Gilly's lyricism painting a stark picture of struggle, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams. His delivery is smooth yet commanding, effortlessly riding the beats with a laid-back swagger reminiscent of rap legends like Nas and Big L.
One of the album's standout moments is "Eyes" a soul-stirring anthem that sees Gilly tackling introspective themes over a sampled soul loop. His introspection is raw and unfiltered, offering listeners a glimpse into the journey of the struggles of an independent artist whilst showcasing his versatility. Homage to his past and the come up with his friends by his side, Shoutouts to other Manchester peeps like our good friends over at Mic Check Media and everyone’s favourite “Barsman turned running chef” RJ add some flavour to this marinade of music.
Throughout "Tape 94," Gilly MCR is joined by a roster of talented guest artists who each bring their own unique flavour to the table. From the blistering presence of label mate D-Wayne to the grimey and gritty flows of Sleazy F Baby, Berry Blacc & OT Babyface are also welcome additions to the project, each collaboration adds depth and dimension to the album, further cementing its status as a Manchester classic.
However, what truly sets "Tape 94" apart is its authenticity. In an age where hip-hop often feels manufactured and formulaic, Gilly MCR's commitment to staying true to the roots of the genre is both commendable and inspiring. With its old-school beats, thoughtful lyricism, and undeniable passion, "Tape 94" serves as a reminder of why hip-hop captured the hearts and minds of listeners worldwide—and why its legacy continues to endure to this day.
This album is another confirmation that the Manchester Hip Hop scene is up there with the best of them. We’ve said before that Manchester could go "bar for bar" with most cities in the world and compete comfortably and this statement still stands.
When the "Hip Hop Champions league" (an idea that’s just come to me and will no doubt occupy my mind now for a while, patent pending so don’t even think about it) Manchester will be close to emerging as victorious as our footballing counterparts.
There’s no shortage of top spitters in this city with people like the aforementioned RJ, JSD, David Rey, our very own Rowen James and obviously the One6Wave including the man of the moment Gilly, I’d back these guys as our starting line up in the final!
Go and check out Tape 94. Wonderfully produced by Broom Man, engineered by the talented and versatile Ten23, mixing and mastering by Driftbetas. You won’t be disappointed.

Uncut Gems
RJ
Manchester Barsman, Midication member and everyone's favourite runner RJ has just released his latest record Uncut Gems (Masterfully produced by JSD) A 3 track EP which, although short in running time, is packed with quality music and exceptional wordplay. We've come to expect this from RJ. Being fans of his previous work (his track "Bars" being one of my personal favourites) I was happy to find that the new project was about to drop when we had a chat before his performance with Soul31 on the Devlin gig in Manchester a few weeks ago.
The project opens strong. "Take me somewhere" is track number 1 of 3 and my personal favourite. With an almost haunting synth loop you can tell from the start that this track is about to get deep. RJ is a changed man, he's made no secret of his past life on earlier releases, He used to go 235 and end up "£350less" Nowadays it's peace that he's looking for. This track is another confirmation statement of RJ's triumph over his previous demons and his success is attributed to being surrounded by the right people, Morning meds, exercise and a focus on putting out quality music.
"Lone Wolf" is next up and the aggressive, assured delivery that we've come to love from RJ is back. Once again touching on his past life. There's no hook in sight on this one, just 3 minutes of raw, message filled bars. Telling the listener that RJ is happy to be alone. In his own lane, working hard and needing no validation from anyone. Not anymore. He's used to this life. From age 13, in his bedroom, practising his flows and you can tell he's put the work in. There's not many out there who can flow the way RJ does. You could class it as Grimey, and over beats as hard as this one, it works perfectly.
"Quarter to Three" brings the project to a perfect close. The beat comes in with the sampled vocals. Another conscious track that is deep with stories of where RJ is in life. He's happy. He's not ashamed to admit that his actions might have been detrimental to those around him in the past. Now he opens up, embraces his family and he's grateful for those people. He's trying to better himself everyday and with Bae by his side, there's nothing he can't do. The rain won't affect his parade. This track is a celebration of change. No excuses. Just one man who's become a better person and wants to share his story. If you need to hear this.. the bars will resonate with you, if you don't, then just appreciate the art and work that went into making it. Everyone song tells a message and this EP is full of them.

Before I Begin
David REY
Everyone's favourite London born, adopted Mancunian David Rey has dropped his debut EP "Before I Begin" We got early access to check it out before it hit the streaming sites from our friends over at Mic Check Media UK.
Starting out on an emotional note with "Before I Begin" David let's us know that he's here and ready to go with a song that, to us, sounds like a direct aim at an un-named person. Only Rey knows who this is locked in on, but it's a strong start to a good body of work.
"Oh they wanna know where the king is? I dont announce myself no more, Fuck that I kick doors off the hinges" is the opening line from the next track "Mind your business" and trust me when I write this, that line will not leave your head once you've heard it. We listen to a lot of music, but this one just seems to not wanna leave your ears. It was a genius move to make this the first track to drop as it's definitely one of the strongest on the board. Wordplay and delivery are on another level with this one. Production is top class as David Rey comes in aggressively over a hard beat. The secondary ad libs really make this track pop. Nice job.
Feeemo joins the EP for the darker "Farda" as he and David Rey team up to step against the new players coming into the game and let them know they gotta come harder to replace the certified people in this city. Feeemo is certainly certified in Manchester, David Rey is up next. If you wanna come to try and take something from these men, you better bring you A-Game or you're gonna get cut... No barber! A solid addition to the EP which is only improved by the presence of Feeemo.
Rey hits us next with "Order and Chaos" which in my opinion is another stand out track on the project. The beat on this one is haunting and the delivery fits perfectly. I found myself wanting another verse on this one if I'm being picky. It felt like it ended too early for me but it still banged.
"Mystery" is up next. David is in deep storytelling mode on this one. Telling his tale of the come up, the adversity of playing in the big league. He's come so far but he isn't "Minding the Gap" which I took as an nod back to his London roots. Backstabbers, disloyalty and pain have clearly been part of that journey but David is using the pain from these tribulations to fuel the fire. I enjoyed this one. Production, once again is perfect.
"Comfort Zone Freestyle" shows more top tier wordplay and flow. As he addresses the demons from his past. Those who didn't believe in him. He's moving on from that life. He can't stay up in the comfort zone. You can't grow if you do.
Ricko Sauce takes over on the "Interlude" with a very complimentary involvement on the EP but honestly, I spent the whole length of the track waiting for David Rey to jump out and spit us to victory. Unfortunately for me, this doesn't happen. This isn't a bad thing, It was just different.
Abnormal Sleepz joins us for "Love and War" A track aimed at a love interest. The beat on this one is exceptional and Sleepz is a welcome addition to any song and a little auto-tune is a refreshing vibe when used this well.
Another freestyle is next. The "No1 Fan" is Rey's love song. Wordplay is class again on this one. Short and sweet but enjoyable none the less.
"In My Dreams" brings the EP to a close. Another "single worthy" song in my opinion. Old school beat with the laid back vocals in the background make this song super likeable. Rey flows over this effortlessly (like always) and talks a little more about his work ethic and dreams to get to where he wants to be. Distraction from the female attention is not something that David has time for, unless you have the stamina and understanding to keep up with his drive and passion.
All in all. "Before I Begin" is a fantastic listen. Masterfully produced and wonderfully written. David Rey is still moving in the right direction. In today's industry, his style and flow would not be out of place on a bigger stage. Hard working, driven and a nice guy to boot. Mic Check media have backed their man to succeed.. And you should too!
We'll let David off for being from "Daarn Saarff" when he drops music as good as this. David Rey is super active in the Manchester Music scene and constantly performing live. Check out his Instagram @1davidrey and his clique @miccheckmediauk to find out when his next gig is. If you enjoyed this EP, trust me when I say it sounds better live!
David will also be performing at Off The Square on Friday October 28th as part of the "Thirty One" line up. Alongside RJ, Ten23, Conduit and our very own Soul31. Tickets for that are on our events page.
